MEPCO Tariff 2027: NEPRA Hearing on Rs127.43 Billion Request
MEPCO has approached NEPRA for the 2027 indexation of its Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) components and other adjustments in the consumer-end tariff. NEPRA published the official notice of hearing on September 24, 2026.
For consumers, the most important point is simple: this is a tariff adjustment request, not an approved increase in your MEPCO electricity rate.
No new per-unit MEPCO tariff should be assumed from the filing until NEPRA completes its regulatory process and issues a decision.
What Has MEPCO Requested for 2027?
According to the filing placed before NEPRA, MEPCO has sought adjustments to the revenue requirements allowed under its existing Multi-Year Tariff framework for calendar year 2027.
The requested revenue requirement is approximately Rs127.431 billion, excluding Power Purchase Price (PPP).
This relates broadly to MEPCO’s regulated distribution and electricity-supply costs. The filing covers components such as operating costs, depreciation, return-related allowances and other adjustments permitted under the tariff framework.
It is important not to confuse this Rs127.431 billion figure with an amount that consumers will directly pay as a new charge. It is part of the regulatory revenue calculation submitted to NEPRA.
Does This Mean MEPCO Electricity Rates Have Increased?
No.
As of September 25, 2026, NEPRA has announced a hearing on MEPCO’s request, but the filing itself does not establish a new approved electricity unit rate for consumers.
A tariff request normally goes through regulatory scrutiny before NEPRA makes its determination. The Authority can examine MEPCO’s calculations, allow or disallow particular costs, seek clarification and determine the amounts that are ultimately justified.
Therefore, claims that MEPCO has already increased electricity prices for 2027 would be premature.
Why Is MEPCO Asking for an Adjustment?
MEPCO operates under a Multi-Year Tariff regime covering FY 2025-26 to FY 2029-30.
Instead of determining every cost from scratch each year, certain approved tariff components can be reviewed or indexed during the control period according to the applicable regulatory mechanism.
NEPRA’s earlier MEPCO tariff determination also shows that Power Purchase Price is by far the largest part of the consumer-end tariff. The current Rs127.431 billion request discussed here excludes that Power Purchase Price, which is why the figure should not be treated as MEPCO’s total electricity cost or converted directly into a consumer per-unit rate.
Will Your Current MEPCO Bill Change?
There is no immediate change to your current bill simply because this request has been filed.
Consumers should continue paying according to the tariff, taxes, surcharges and adjustments actually applicable to their billing period.
If you want to verify the charges currently appearing on your account rather than estimate them from the 2027 filing, you can check your latest MEPCO bill using your reference number or consumer ID.
Any future consumer impact from this MYT adjustment should only be assessed after NEPRA issues its decision and the applicable tariff is formally implemented.
What Happens Next?
NEPRA will consider MEPCO’s request through its regulatory hearing process.
The key document to watch next is NEPRA’s final decision, because that will show which requested costs were accepted, modified or rejected and whether the outcome produces any actual change relevant to MEPCO consumers.
Until then, there is no verified basis for saying how much a 100-unit, 200-unit or 500-unit MEPCO bill will rise because of this filing.
We will update this information when NEPRA publishes a final determination.
